YEAR 6 - SILVER BIRCH
Teacher: Mrs Smith/Mrs Phillipson
Welcome to Year Six, Silver Birch where we love to learn. We make our learning exciting and engaging through every opportunity to make connections to the world around us.
In Year Six, we are lucky enough to visit a variety of places, from RAF Hendon, residential trips to local visits. The work we study helps the children in developing an understanding of the world and aiding them to be successful citizens of the future. From environmental issues, political discussion and reading around current affairs, we ensure children are prepared for the next stage of learning.
At Oughton, we offer a wide range of support: Morning Boosters, After School Learning Clubs, Holiday Boosters and homework help at lunchtime - all to guide each child to reach their full potential.
Through the use of whole school WOWs, class events and outdoor learning in our spectacular grounds, we hope to inspire and create lasting memories.

Year 6 2025
Silver Birch Class – Mythical Creatures Writing
Following our English work on The Spiderwick Chronicles, the children in Silver Birch have been inspired to step into a world of imagination and creativity. Using what they learnt from the text, they have worked incredibly hard to design and create their own unique mythical creatures.
The children carefully thought about their creature’s appearance, habitat, and special abilities, showing great originality and attention to detail. They then brought their ideas to life through their writing, producing some fantastic and imaginative descriptions.
Throughout this unit, the children have focused on incorporating a range of grammar features. They have worked hard to vary their sentence structures, use ambitious vocabulary, and include descriptive language such as expanded noun phrases and relative clauses to make their writing more engaging.
Here are our creature plans so far—look out for our finished writing coming soon!

Silver Birch Class – Year 6 Update
This term has been incredibly exciting for Silver Birch class! One of the highlights was watching the fantastic production of Alice in Wonderland. The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were inspired by the acting, costumes, and staging. Following this, Year 6 also took part in a fun and engaging workshop, where they explored drama and performance skills themselves.
We also celebrated Chinese New Year by taking part in a special workshop, where the children experienced the traditional dragon dance. They loved learning about the cultural significance of the celebration and enjoyed working together to bring the dragon to life.
In computing, we had an amazing workshop where the children programmed toy cars using micro:bits. They developed their coding skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as their creations came to life.
In English, the children have been working extremely hard to vary their sentence structures. They have explored different ways to start sentences, used a range of conjunctions, and developed their writing to make it more engaging and effective.
In DT, the children designed and made their own bags as part of a sewing project. They showed great creativity in their designs and developed important practical skills, including cutting, stitching, and assembling their final products.
In science, we have been learning about classification and what makes something a living organism. As part of this topic, we carried out an experiment using yeast to investigate whether it is alive. The children made predictions, observed reactions, and recorded their findings like real scientists.
It has been a busy and enjoyable term full of creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning. Well done, Silver Birch!

Year 6 2024-2025
Year 6 has had an eventful first half term of 2025. We have continued to build on the important work already started by Reverend Maxine and The Alban Way initiative, learning about the Examen and how this can help with our resilience tool kit. Our History learning culminated in a Trojan Horse Wow Day, where we brought the story to life. The half term ended with our Feel Good Week, which gave us the opportunity to learn about emotions in a creative way, including an art project centred on the feelings of ennui and envy. Our artistic journey continued in a dance and music workshops, where we experimented with making music using paintbrushes! What better way to cap off the week than with an exciting football match that brought everyone together for some friendly competition.
Year 6 autumn 2024 review
Year 6 had a very busy and exciting Autumn term. From creating their own planets to developing our photography skills, from learning about World War II to developing their knowledge of Fair Trade, our pupils have impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm shown towards their learning.
In English, the children worked incredibly hard writing mystery and suspense stories for the class anthology. We know that our Key Stage Two peers, our intended audience, enjoyed reading our tales. Year 6 also found time to create their own planets and write reports on these to encourage Year 6 classmates to visit. In our most recent English unit, there were so many things that the class wanted to banish to Room 101. From spiders to fighting, from obnoxious eating to unclean whiteboards and from deadly sea creatures to drowning, the children worked tirelessly in their persuasive campaigns and their hard work was clear to see during the delivery of their final speeches. Mrs Lopez and
Mrs Rodriguez found it quite a challenge to choose which pet peeves or fears to dispatch to Room 101.
As well as working with Oughton teachers, Year 6 has also been fortunate enough to work with Phase and Reverend Maxine on our PSHCE learning. Through the power of a jug, marble and plastic balls, the class evaluated what life priorities were and how to juggle these. With Reverend Maxine, the children worked on their transition into Year 6, building on skills that will support them in their future transition into secondary.
Our History unit of World War II is one that the children will remember for years to come. The class showed great empathy and maturity while learning about this difficult time in our history. It was also very special to be able to hear from one of our own pupils talking about his visit to Wolf's Lair during his holiday to Poland.
The class also visited RAF Hendon to see firsthand the fighter planes learned about during the class lessons as well as learn about the Blitz experience. The highlight of the trip was each child having the opportunity to wear RAF uniforms that had belonged to wartime members of the RAF. A memory the children will cherish for years to come.
To consolidate the learning, the class had a WOW Day during which they learned more about the evacuee experience and they were able to tap into the photography skills gained during their Art work to recreate iconic photographs from the era.
Well done to each and every one of you, Year 6, for your hard work and enthusiasm throughout what has been an excellent start to your final year at Oughton. We are very much looking forward to seeing where our learning journey takes us to in 2025. Watch this space!

Year 6 2023 - 2024
We have been revising and working hard in preparation for the SATS tests in May, in our spare time we have designed model playgrounds in Design & Technology, composed our own rap and backing track on computers.
In history we have been looking at the Ancient Greeks, we have studied their Gods, myths and battle tactics. In P.E we have gone orienteering and completed a team gymnastic routine using vaults and different types of roll.

In Silver Birch this half term, we have completed our 'Oughton Field Guide' based upon the Spider Wick Chronicles. The children each drew and wrote a report on their own mythical creatures which was then compiled into a book. This was so good that the entire class received a Gold Head Teachers award in a celebration assembly . Using this is our inspiration we used clay in art to create models of our creatures.
In geography we have been studying rivers and hope to have a trip out to the Oughton Head when the weather improves. In science we have been investigating light and have now moved onto electricity which is quite shocking.
As we have been lucky with the weather we have been able to go outside in PE and have been learning the skills and rules of basketball.

Art Week 2023
The children made some wonderful art during Art Week which was displayed at our Art Exhibition in June.
k'nex Challenge
On Monday 27th March, Year 6 worked on a mechanical engineering project using K’NEX with a representative of Airbus Defence and Space setting them the challenge of building cranes. After planning their designs with a partner, they built them and then presented them to the class.
Art Project with Artist Sarah Graham
Year Six pupils were given the amazing opportunity to work with Sarah Graham, local artist with world-wide acclaim and ex-pupil of Oughton, to create designs for a snowman to take part in the "Walking With The Snowman" trail. The trail opened in the town in December 2022 and was inspired by Raymond Brigg's classic picture book "The Snowman" which is also a family favourite Christmas film.
Sarah took the pupils designs, with the theme of 'Ten Lords a Leaping', and used them to create the most colourful and eye-catching snowman in the trail.
Representatives of Year Six braved the rain and visited the snowman alongside Sarah, a local councillor and representative of Cala Homes, for a photo opportunity and another chance to chat to Sarah. We are very much looking forward to working with her again.

WW2 WOW Day
Year 6 stepped back in time to World War II at the end of the Autumn half term. The children came in dressed as land girls and evacuees wearing labels to show their names and home town. Many of the evacuees came clutching a teddy bear to offer them comfort. Making their own gas masks was a must given the various air raid sirens they experienced during the day. The children went on to study genuine evacuee testimonies as well as propaganda, creating their own posters, with slogans to support the war effort and keep everyone’s moral up.
