Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE)
Intent
PSHE provides a foundation for children’s learning and development as well as their wellbeing. At Oughton Primary and Nursery School, we value the importance of PSHE in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. We use the Jigsaw Programme to enhance our PSHE curriculum, which aims to improve the children’s capacity to learn across the curriculum and could ultimately improve their life chances. We also reinforce the British Values to support PSHE.
We aim to ensure children:
Implementation
As recommended by the DfE we are following the programmes of study from The PSHE Association. We use Jigsaw as a scheme from Nursery and Reception to Year 6. Each Year group follows this scheme, incorporating 6 units of work (puzzles). Each series of Pieces (lessons), learning builds and develops across each Puzzle.
Nursery and Reception focus heavily on Personal, Social and Emotional Development (area of learning) as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, meeting the needs of the children.
We also use ‘Teaching SRE with Confidence’ from Years 1 to 6.
Please see our PSHE Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group.
Our curriculum enables our children to develop as individuals and develop their own sense of wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. We encourage them to improve their social skills and to engage in collaborative learning. We aim to support them in reflecting on their learning and personal development.
We assess using our Knowledge sheets alongside attitudes within PSHE. Our Knowledge Sheets highlight the core knowledge and key vocabulary to be taught within each unit of work.
Impact
The standard of work in PSHE is high, with the majority of children achieving age related expectations or above. Our children become reflective individuals, understanding their impact on the world. Our children are more aware of the world around them, their position within it and the opportunities available for them in life.
