Mathematics
Intent
At Oughton Primary and Nursery School, we understand that a high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the wonder of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
We aim to ensure children:
Implementation
Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) follow the EYFS curriculum focusing on Number & Numerical Patterns. We use Herts for Learning Essentials in Reception in order to provide a secure sequence of learning throughout the school.
Maths in Year 1 to 6 is taught following the National Curriculum 2014. We follow Herts for Learning Mathematics Essentials planning and we use a variety of resources to help support the learning in Maths. Each Year group follows this scheme, incorporating all areas of Mathematics as outlined in the National Curriculum for each year group. We are using the Herts for Learning Assessment format, to show progress and attainment in Maths. Planning incorporates short and main tasks, with application tasks within the lesson. Maths lessons are interactive to ensure that children enjoy and participate in their lessons. Different strategies are taught throughout the school – see Calculation Policy. We aim to ensure that Mathematics is a subject which children view positively and with a ‘Can do’ attitude. Our curriculum allows children to better make sense of the world around them by making connections between mathematics and everyday life.
Please see our Maths Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group – Nursery to Year 6.
Our curriculum enables our children to investigate and implement a range of Mathematical skills. Children engage with Mathematical ideas in a range of ways, from the physical to the abstract, and engage with Mathematical problems in a range of real world situations and discussions. In addition, through the Herts Essentials Planning, each year group logically and clearly builds upon the skills previously taught in the previous year groups, breaking up each learning section into blocks. Children are exposed to a wide range of Mathematical language and vocabulary, which is also outlined at the start of each unit in the Herts planning, allowing them to understand a range of Mathematical problems and contexts.
Basic Maths skills are taught daily, focusing on key mathematical skills and language. A range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding. Children can be taught through targeted differentiated, small group and mixed ability whole class lessons.
In addition, Key stages 1 and 2 have frequent Maths fluency sessions - 3 times a week. These sessions refresh the key skills and knowledge taught in prior year groups and earlier in the current year. This helps the children to retain Mathematical understanding through frequent use. These sessions are largely number focused but will also touch on shape and statistics where appropriate.
Discussion is essential to learning and children are encouraged to discuss their thoughts, ideas and methods with a partner, group or the teacher, using high level mathematical language. Task types are varied to suit different pupils; developing reasoning is a key focus and access for all children is ensured using a range of reasoning activities. Children work both collaboratively and independently when solving problems, which require them to persevere and develop resilience. Moreover, a range of cross-curricular activities, such as National Number Day and Aspirations Week, help to build enjoyment and curiosity of Maths in our children, which in turn helps them to retain mathematical concepts as they are linked to real world activities.
Feedback in Maths is given in a variety of ways to ensure pupils are well informed and making visible progress.
Impact
The standard of work in Maths is positive, with overall, children making good progress. Our children are engaged and are challenged. The children are confident and are able to talk about Maths and their learning, and the links between Mathematical topics. As a result of exposure to different learning styles (concrete pictorial and abstract) the children are be able to use different representations of mathematical concepts. Learning is tracked and monitored (using HfL steps) to ensure all children make good progress. Our children become effective Mathematicians and are able to apply their understanding in a range of contexts and are also well equipped for the transition to Key Stage 3 at the end of Year 6.
At Oughton Primary and Nursery School, we understand that a high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the wonder of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
We aim to ensure children:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice, with increasingly complex problems over time.
- Develop an ability to recall knowledge and apply arithmetic rapidly and accurately.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships and using mathematical language to explain.
- Understand, retain and apply mathematical language.
- Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems, including breaking down more complex problems into a series of simpler steps.
