GEOGRAPHY
Intent
We believe that a high-quality Geography education inspires a curiosity and fascination about the world we live in and develops contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine.
At Oughton Primary, we enable children to understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human features of the world and how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time. Throughout their time at Oughton Primary, children have opportunities to develop an interest in Geography, which increases their understanding of their local environment and beyond.
We aim to ensure children:
Implementation
We are following the National Curriculum in Geography for Years 1 to 6 and we use Collins as a scheme, which builds upon knowledge and skills. Each Year group follows this scheme, incorporating 3 units of work (lines of enquiry).
Please see our Geography Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group.
Early Years Foundation Stage follows the EYFS curriculum focusing on Understanding the World. This can also be seen as part of the Geography Overview.
Our curriculum enables our children to investigate a range of places and develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. Geographical skills are built into our curriculum and subject specific vocabulary is highlighted as this is a key priority for our school, focusing on developing language.
We assess using our Knowledge sheets alongside skills within Geography. Our Knowledge Sheets highlight the core knowledge and key vocabulary to be taught within each unit of work.
Impact
The standard of work in Geography is positive, with the majority of children achieving age related expectations or above. Our children become reflective geographers, understanding their impact on the world. Our children become more aware of the world around them and the opportunities available for them in life.
