Physical education
Intent
A high-quality Physical Education curriculum inspires all pupils to participate, succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. At Oughton Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to providing opportunities for children to become physically confident and compete in sport and activities which build character and embed values such as fairness and respect, regardless of ability, gender or race. We also recognise that physical education is essential in leading a healthy life.
We aim to ensure children:
Please see our Sports Premium page for our current Sports Premium Strategy which details our aims, focus and targets regarding Sports Premium funding.
Implementation
Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) follows the EYFS curriculum focusing on Physical Development using selected units of work from Get Set for PE.
We are following the National Curriculum in PE for Years 1 to 6 and we use Get Set for PE scheme, which builds upon knowledge and skills. Each year group follows these units building on a progression of skills and knowledge. The curriculum covers the different elements of PE – Gymnastics, Dance, Games and Swimming over the course of Key Stage 1 and 2.
All children have PE sessions throughout the week, led by their Teachers and in some cases, Sports Coaches. Children are taught a wide range of skills, through exciting and stimulating activities. These are differentiated to allow for different abilities and physical contexts.
We assess using our Knowledge sheets, which highlight the core knowledge to be taught within each unit of work.
At the present time, we are reviewing our PE Curriculum - our long and medium term planning and looking into purchasing a Scheme of Work to enhance our provision further.
See the PE Overview for more information about what is taught in each year group.
Impact
The standard of work in PE is positive, with the majority of children achieving age related expectations or above. Our children have an understanding of the importance of physical activity for a long-term healthy lifestyle. The children are able to foster an interest and enjoyment of activities and sport.
