Science
Intent
At Oughton Primary and Nursery School, we know that Science is essential in today’s society for future prosperity. Science teaching at Oughton aims to provide all children with a strong and secure understanding of the world around them. Children will develop the skills needed to enable them to think scientifically, gain an understanding of scientific processes and the uses and implications of science today and in the future.
We aim to ensure children:
- develop an interest in the world around them.
- learn and retain key scientific knowledge and vocabulary.
- have regular opportunities to carry out experiments and develop investigative skills. - are confident in asking, discussing and answering scientific questions.
Implementation
In line with the Early Learning Goals, Science in Early Years is taught through investigating, exploring and as part of the Understanding the World area of learning. Children’s interests are essential in the planning and teaching of Science.
We are following the National Curriculum in Science for Years 1 to 6 and we use an amalgamation of the ASE PLAN resources, Explorify and Twinkl Scheme of work, which builds upon knowledge. Scientific enquiry uses the Herts for Learning wheel for progression of skills. Each Year group follows the curriculum, incorporating 5 units of work with enquiry skills embedded throughout.
Please see our Science Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group.
We assess using the Herts for Learning assessment trackers and Scientific enquiry wheels. Knowledge Sheets highlight the core knowledge and key vocabulary to be taught within each unit of work.
The knowledge of Science is taught through the teaching of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in all topics taught at Oughton and key skills are developed as the children progress each year. This allows children to build upon knowledge gained in previous years and ensures it is retained into the long-term memory. Specialist vocabulary is taught during each topic and the children are encouraged to use new vocabulary inside and outside of the classroom. The skills of observation, planning, investigating and concluding using scientific vocabulary allows them to become independent learners and question the world around them.
Impact
The standard of work in Science is high, with the majority of children making good progress and achieving age related expectation at the end of Year 6. Our children develop an interest and understanding of the world both inside and outside the school environment and are enthusiastic and positive about their learning and take an active role in their Science lessons.
