Modern foreign language - french
Intent
‘The limits of my language are the limits of my universe.’ Ludwig Wittgenstein
Learning a foreign language is essential and it provides an opening to other cultures and liberation from insularity. At Oughton Primary, we aim to provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language, enabling children to communicate for practical purposes, understand and respond to its speakers and express ideas.
We aim to ensure children:
Implementation
We are following the National Curriculum in Modern Foreign Languages for French in Key Stage Two and use the Twinkl scheme. Each class covers a unit each half term with the exception of Year 6, which has the Spring term to consolidate previous learning to ensure pupils have a firm foundation for language learning in Key Stage Three.
Please see our Modern Foreign Language French Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group.
Our scheme plans for sequenced lessons so that prior learning is built upon alongside the introduction of new skills. Revision opportunities for language and grammar are also planned for. As well as the introduction and revision of key vocabulary and grammatical structures, the lessons also offer pupils an insight into the culture of French-speaking communities and countries.
The teaching of a Modern Foreign Language is compulsory in Key Stage Two but the concept of different languages is introduced from Early Years through the use of greetings from other cultures. Different cultures are celebrated and introduced to both key stages through our diverse school calendar and activities are planned for Year 2 in the Summer term to support transition to Key Stage Two.
We assess using our Knowledge sheets, which highlight the core knowledge and key vocabulary to be taught within each unit of work.
Impact
A love of language learning and cultural understanding is developed throughout Key Stage Two. The profile of Modern Foreign Languages is increased through use of the full range of resources available, including displays throughout Key Stage Two and a French curriculum board accessible by all children.
Our pupils become reflective language learners, self-assessing their learning at the end of each lesson and this information supports the Teacher to incorporate consolidation opportunities in the subsequent lesson or during the week through language embedding opportunities.
In French, the standard of work is positive, with the majority of children achieving age-related expectations or above.

- speak in sentences with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and language structures.
- develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand them.
