Art

Intent
‘Every human is an artist.’ Don Miguel Ruiz.
Art should inspire pupils, meaning that they can explore techniques with no limits, giving them the opportunity to create without judgement.
We aim to ensure children:
  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • evaluate and appreciate creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • are exposed to and experience art in the world, developing their individual interests.

Implementation
We are following the National Curriculum in Art and Design for Years 1 to 6. Our Art curriculum is high quality and is planned to meet the needs of the children at  Oughton. It also demonstrates clear progression. Teachers use Kapow  medium term planning and Kapow's progression of knowledge and skills document to deliver high-quality lessons. The teaching and implementation of Art and Design ensures a structured approach by primarily linking to topics taught in KS1 and KS2.

Please see our Art Overview which highlights the units of work for each year group.

Early Years Foundation Stage follows the EYFS curriculum focusing on Expressive Arts and Design.

Our curriculum enables our children to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture.  Children will also be taught how Art and Design can reflect and shape our history, contribute to the culture, creativity, diversity and wealth of our nation, with a heavy focus on Artists.  Children’s knowledge and skills are built upon a sequence of lessons which lead to a final piece.

Each pupil from Years 1 to 6 has their own sketchbook which moves with them through the school. This provides them with concrete evidence of their knowledge and skills which gives our pupils a clear view of their progress.

A main focus is the teaching of an artist, their work, context and influence. We encourage pupils to reflect and think critically about artwork.  Through learning about the roles and functions of art, pupils can explore the impact it has on contemporary life and different times and cultures. They also learn how Art contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

We assess using our Knowledge sheets alongside skills within Art. Our Knowledge Sheets highlight the core knowledge and key vocabulary to be taught within each unit of work.

Impact
The standard of work in Art is high, with the majority of children making positive progress and reaching age related expectations or above.  Teachers have high expectations and evidence can be shown in a variety of different ways. Children use technical vocabulary accurately and expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes taught in lessons. Children become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children are able to talk about a range of different Artists, with a focus on diversity. Art enables children to improve their enquiry skills about the world around them, build their resilience and understand how they can impact Art and Design on the world.
