YEAR 5 (WILLOW)
Teachers: Mrs Lopez/Mrs Rodriguez
Welcome to the Willow Class page.
Year 5 is an exciting stage in your child’s learning journey. The year will be full of opportunities to grow in independence, confidence and curiosity as the children build on the strong foundations of previous years while preparing for this stage in their learning, Upper Key Stage 2.
In Year 5, we place a strong emphasis on developing key skills across the core subjects: from deepening reading comprehension and refining writing techniques, to applying mathematical understanding in more complex problem-solving.
Children also explore the wider curriculum through engaging activities that encourage them to make connections between subjects and the wider world. To help consolidate their understanding of the wider curriculum, we are excitedly planning WOW Days linked to our History, Design and Technology and Art units. Please see our Parental Handbook for further details.

Year 5 Updates
Willow Class - Using Drama to Inspire their English Writing
Willow Class used drama to support their English writing by creating freeze frames from the story The Promise. The children worked together to capture key moments from the text, such as the towering blocks of flats and the melancholy commuters bustling through the grey, dark streets. After each freeze frame, the children discussed what they could see and feel in the scene. In small groups, they then added powerful adjectives and similes to their word banks. These ideas will help them later in the week when writing their own narrative, enabling them to set the scene and immerse their reader in the dull, gloomy world of the story.

Willow Class - Gymnastics during PE
During PE, Willow Class worked with the specialist coaches to use the apparatus and ropes to challenge themselves physically. The children showed great determination as they climbed, balanced and moved across the equipment, testing their strength and coordination. Many pupils pushed themselves to try things that initially made them nervous, building confidence as they went. By using their bodies to balance and control their movements, the children developed resilience and overcame fears while supporting and encouraging one another. |
Designing and Creating Bridges in D.T.
In DT, Willow Class designed and created their own bridges. They first experimented with classroom equipment to test how different structures could suspend and hold varying weights. The children then worked as a team to build bridge models using lollipop sticks, carefully thinking about strong joins and stable structures. After testing and improving their ideas, their final bridge designs were created using wood, bringing their learning about strength and construction to life.

2023 - 2024 |
In the bustling hub of the Year 5 Design and Technology classroom, excitement brewed as eager young minds prepared for a culinary adventure. Armed with aprons and a sprinkle of anticipation, the children embarked on a journey of slice, chop, and grate. Under the watchful eye of their teacher, they delved into the art of kitchen mastery, each with their trusty knives with a newfound sense of responsibility. But before the first vegetable met its fate, there was a crucial lesson to be learned: safety first. With precision and care, they adopted the claw and bridge method, ensuring their fingers remained intact while their culinary creations flourished. The classroom echoed with the rhythmic sound of knives meeting cutting boards, a symphony of culinary craftsmanship in the making.
Year Five are thoroughly enjoying their music lessons! With each session, our students delve deeper into the world of music, exploring rhythm, melody, and harmony with enthusiasm and curiosity. Everyone was fully engaged and eager to participate. Whether they're singing together as a choir or experimenting with xylophones, it's a joy to see their passion for music blossom. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and progress, and I can't wait to see what musical adventures await them in the future!
What an exciting first half to spring term it has been! Our young learners have been immersed in a captivating journey, discovering the treasures and marvels nestled within our National Parks. With maps as our guides and research as our compass, we embarked on a quest to unravel the rich heritage woven into the fabric of the United Kingdom's national parks.
Delving deeper into the scenic wonders, our focus turned to The Lake District, where the children became architects of knowledge, crafting informative leaflets that could easily guide any visitor through the landscapes. Their creations are not just leaflets; they are windows into the heart of nature, activities and amazing wonders they hold.
The artistic spirit has soared high during our 'Mixed Media' Portraits project, where creativity knows no bounds. Each stroke of paint, every collage element, and every artistic decision has contributed to a collective masterpiece, a testament to the diverse and imaginative talents within our learning community.
In the realm of religious education, we transported ourselves into the poignant narrative of 'Pass Over,' which linked to our exploration of Judaism. The children didn't just learn about the customs and beliefs; they brought the stories to life through dramatic enactments. The classroom became a stage, and our young actors exhibited not only a great understanding of the subject matter but also a deep appreciation for the power of drama in enhancing their learning journey.

Art Week 2023
The children made some wonderful art during Art Week which was displayed at our Art Exhibition in June.
Yr 5 Forces and Materials Wow day - December 2022
Year Five investigated different forces and materials during their wow day in December. The children experimented with different materials to see which best protected the egg when dropped from a height. In addition, they investigated which forces affected the egg such as gravity and air resistance. As a result, they used a range of materials to protect the egg in order to utilise air resistance.
Cambridge Science Centre Trip - October 2022
At the end of the Autumn half term, Year 5 visited the Cambridge Science Centre where they learnt all about space, their topic in science. They had a presentation about living and working in space, thinking about things like friction, gravity, food and even the toilet! Then, they had time to investigate other areas of Year 5 science in hands-on exhibits, including forces, air resistance and even DNA.
WOW Day - Aztec Chocolate Making
As part of their history topic studying the Aztec period, Year Five investigated the history of chocolate. They discovered that chocolate was invented by the Maya, who were in turn invaded by the Aztecs, who were then conquered by the Spanish, who spread it across the world! They created their own chocolate, designed their own chocolate bar, as well as tasted a range of chocolates.
