YEAR 5 (WILLOW)
Teachers: Mrs Smith
|
Welcome to Willow class page.
In Year 5, we aim to build on previous learning while securing fundamental skills ready for Year 6. This year, children are growing in maturity and are given greater independence in their learning, enabling them to grow in confidence.
Children are given more responsibility with their own learning, for example having more opportunity to discuss and debate their own ideas. Furthermore, we have a wide range of activities, such as our WOW days and exciting trips to inspire the children and enable them to learn in a range of creative ways. In our lessons, children will work in a range of ways from debates to acting, from building 3D shapes in Maths to explaining their ideas and opinions in History and using our outside space for Science.

Year 5 Updates
Year 5 recently immersed themselves in a creative afternoon inspired by the contemporary Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Taking cues from Guo-Qiang's explosive art installations, the children unleashed their imaginations on the school field, transforming ordinary boxes into vibrant explosions of colour using paint, chalks, and glitter. Guided by their teachers, they explored the freedom of expression, each box becoming a canvas for their individuality. Their artwork not only celebrated Guo-Qiang's visionary approach but also taught valuable lessons in collaboration and creativity. As the field became a gallery of dynamic energy, the children left behind a trail of awe-inspiring beauty, which will be on display during our Art Exhibition on Thursday 6th June.
On Thursday, the 25th of April, Year Five had a "Wow Day" that left everyone's taste buds tingling. The highlight of the day? Cooking up a storm as they whipped together a delicious spaghetti Bolognese. From chopping veggies to simmering sauce, the children showcased their culinary skills with enthusiasm and flair. It was a day filled with teamwork, laughter, and of course, the delightful aroma of a homemade meal wafting through the air. In the afternoon we created our own labels for our jars for our wonderful sauce.
In the bustling hub of the Year 5 Design and Technology classroom, excitement brewed as eager young minds prepared for a culinary adventure. Armed with aprons and a sprinkle of anticipation, the children embarked on a journey of slice, chop, and grate. Under the watchful eye of their teacher, they delved into the art of kitchen mastery, each with their trusty knives with a newfound sense of responsibility. But before the first vegetable met its fate, there was a crucial lesson to be learned: safety first. With precision and care, they adopted the claw and bridge method, ensuring their fingers remained intact while their culinary creations flourished. The classroom echoed with the rhythmic sound of knives meeting cutting boards, a symphony of culinary craftsmanship in the making.
Year Five are thoroughly enjoying their music lessons! With each session, our students delve deeper into the world of music, exploring rhythm, melody, and harmony with enthusiasm and curiosity. Everyone was fully engaged and eager to participate. Whether they're singing together as a choir or experimenting with xylophones, it's a joy to see their passion for music blossom. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and progress, and I can't wait to see what musical adventures await them in the future!
What an exciting first half to spring term it has been! Our young learners have been immersed in a captivating journey, discovering the treasures and marvels nestled within our National Parks. With maps as our guides and research as our compass, we embarked on a quest to unravel the rich heritage woven into the fabric of the United Kingdom's national parks.
Delving deeper into the scenic wonders, our focus turned to The Lake District, where the children became architects of knowledge, crafting informative leaflets that could easily guide any visitor through the landscapes. Their creations are not just leaflets; they are windows into the heart of nature, activities and amazing wonders they hold.
The artistic spirit has soared high during our 'Mixed Media' Portraits project, where creativity knows no bounds. Each stroke of paint, every collage element, and every artistic decision has contributed to a collective masterpiece, a testament to the diverse and imaginative talents within our learning community.
In the realm of religious education, we transported ourselves into the poignant narrative of 'Pass Over,' which linked to our exploration of Judaism. The children didn't just learn about the customs and beliefs; they brought the stories to life through dramatic enactments. The classroom became a stage, and our young actors exhibited not only a great understanding of the subject matter but also a deep appreciation for the power of drama in enhancing their learning journey.

Art Week 2023
The children made some wonderful art during Art Week which was displayed at our Art Exhibition in June.
Yr 5 Forces and Materials Wow day - December 2022
Year Five investigated different forces and materials during their wow day in December. The children experimented with different materials to see which best protected the egg when dropped from a height. In addition, they investigated which forces affected the egg such as gravity and air resistance. As a result, they used a range of materials to protect the egg in order to utilise air resistance.
Cambridge Science Centre Trip - October 2022
At the end of the Autumn half term, Year 5 visited the Cambridge Science Centre where they learnt all about space, their topic in science. They had a presentation about living and working in space, thinking about things like friction, gravity, food and even the toilet! Then, they had time to investigate other areas of Year 5 science in hands-on exhibits, including forces, air resistance and even DNA.
WOW Day - Aztec Chocolate Making
As part of their history topic studying the Aztec period, Year Five investigated the history of chocolate. They discovered that chocolate was invented by the Maya, who were in turn invaded by the Aztecs, who were then conquered by the Spanish, who spread it across the world! They created their own chocolate, designed their own chocolate bar, as well as tasted a range of chocolates.
