YEAR 4 (BEECH)

Teacher:  Mrs Strange / Miss Savage
In this class, the children are full of enthusiasm and curiosity, which they put to good use in all areas of the curriculum. We enjoy learning with partners and groups as well as working hard independently too.

Over the year, we work on developing our English and Maths skills in particular as well as investigating and learning about the wider world.

These Year 4 children are amazing! They work so hard enjoy looking at our work photographs.

Year 4: 2024-2025

Year 4 Autumn TERM 2024 Review

We have been very busy in Year 4 this term and the children should be very proud of all their achievements over the last few months.

In English, we have been enjoying reading a variety of text and using these to create our own writing; ranging from  graphic novels to a persuasive letters-trying to persuade Mrs Clayton to upgrade the snack trolley!!

We had a fabulously productive DT WOW day, where we made a pavilion structure with a roof and 3 sides. The children learnt how to saw, build a frame and then clad it, using lollypop sticks, card and a hot glue gun to create their constructions. I think we definitely have some budding architects, designers and builders in our midst. Please see our photos of our AMAZING designs below.

We were also lucky enough to have Herts Music Services come in every Friday this term to teach us Djembe drumming. We learnt about bass and tone, rhythm and beat and the children then composed their own rhythms using musical notation. I have attached some photos of us playing.

I look forward to seeing all your lovely learning in the Spring term!

YEAR 4 Spring term SO FAR...

The Mystery of the Pesky Pen Pincher!

On Monday 20th January 2025, Year 4 arrived to school to their very own real life mystery! When Mrs Strange asked them to get their pens out to start work. they noticed all their pens were missing! When they started to search for clues, they discovered muddy footprints trailing around the classroom, which lead out of the class and towards the schools main entrance. After speaking to witnesses to gather more information, Year 4 decided to create their own newspaper report, to let people know about the mystery of The Pesky Pen Pincher. We have attached a few of our newspaper articles here, to give your more information about the mystery. Year 4 are advising people to be vigilant and on the look out for people with an abnormal amount of pens!

HITCHIN MUSEUM WORKSHOP
Today, 04.2.25, Year 4 had an amazingly informative visit from Hitchin Museum for our Geography topic looking at how and why places change. We learnt about how Hitchin has changed over 1000's of years, from its origins on Windmill and Kershalls hill to coming down to flatter grounds and the Hitchin we all know now with its market square. The lady from the museum showed us how Hitchin has grown and changed over the years and how it specifically changed with the introduction of the railway. We then looked at certain characters from Hitchin past such as Mr Wilshere and Mr Hawkins and how their lives changed following the building of the railway station in Hitchin. Here are some photos of the workshop.

Year 4: 2023-2024

Year 4 have been busy developing their Scratch coding skills recently. the children have been very good at helping each other. Also, they very much enjoyed baking biscuits and adding an ingredient, chocolate chip cookies were very popular, during their DT day. They then had to design their packaging after looking at and discussing current biscuit packaging, they all did an amazing and professional job.
We have just started our new Science topic of 'Electricity' and the class had a great session creating working circuits to make the bulb light up, which they all managed to do.
Year 4 have been busy in all areas of the curriculum. During the Science topic of Sound the Year 4 children worked together to set up an experiment to work out which material was best for soundproofing. They also made string telephones to investigate sound travelling.
For the unit on Biscuits in D.T., the children got to taste and evaluate different biscuits. They had to discuss the texture, the look as well as the taste of the biscuit. Also, who are the consumers of the biscuits.
Participating in a skateboarding session was nerve wracking at first but great fun. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills as you can tell!

Art Week 2023

The children made some wonderful art during Art Week which was displayed at our Art Exhibition in June.

HINDU LESSON

Beech class welcomed a visitor to further their learning of the Hindu religion in November. Alison from the Hindu Temple in Watford visited with many artefacts for the children to learn about. She explained about different festivals and how they are celebrated and some of the children were given the opportunity to dress up as gods and goddesses.  After answering the children’s, Alison kindly gave the class a book about the Hindu religion.
