Nursery Updates
During the Summer Term the nursery children will be learning about Animals’ and ‘Water’, where they will investigate different animal types, animal homes, camouflage, where water comes from, the uses of water and water conservation.
These topics help our children to learn in all the different areas of the curriculum.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development:This term the nursery children will be taking parts in lots of activities to help them with transition to their next class, meeting our new teacher and visiting our new classrooms. They will have lots of opportunities to ask questions to make sure transition is as smooth as possible. We will be encouraging the children to become more independent with their self-help skills, e.g., managing their own clothes, coats, shoes etc.
Physical Development:This term the nursery children will be learning these skills-
Physical: run, balance, change direction, throw, catch
Social: work safely, communication, co-operation, support and encourage others
Emotional: confidence, honesty, determination, manage emotions
Thinking: comprehension, decision making
They will learn how to play games showing an understanding of the different roles, they will work co-operatively and learn to take turns. They will work with others to play team games.
Communication And Language: We will be sharing lots of books and stories together. We will also talk about the different parts of the book, pages and cover. This term we will be looking at non-fiction books about animals and water. We will also be reading some well-known stories such as Jasper’s Beanstalk and The Little Red Hen. In small group work, we will continue to develop and use focused listening and attention skills.
Literacy: To help with transition to reception the children will be learning how to hold their pencil correctly. Everyday they will practise reading and writing their names. When discussing stories they will make links with what they already know. When listening to stories the children will apply their phonological awareness: identifying initial letter sounds, counting syllables, and listening out for rhyming words.
Mathematics: The nursery children will be learning to build on and apply their understanding of number when carrying out a range of maths-based activities and opportunities – using a wide range of resources, indoor and outdoor. They will continue to develop their number knowledge and recognition. They will begin to use their own way of representing and recording their maths work – with marks, pictures, or numbers. Develop an understanding of ordinal numbers – 1 st, 2nd 3 rd etc. Use language relating to pattern, height, capacity and weight and learn the days of the week
Understanding The World:When learning about animals and water the nursery children will develop their vocabulary by describing and talking about what they see happening during activities and events, such as watching duck eggs hatch. They will talk about faith and family events and use appropriate vocabulary to describe the environmental, seasonal changes.
Expressive Arts And DesignThis term the children will explore how sounds can be made: faster, slower, louder, quieter and use this knowledge when making their own tunes and songs. They will develop their creative ideas, by choosing preferred resources and techniques learned during the year. The children will use small world resources to develop in depth story scenarios and use a range of construction resources when creating their own small world scenes.
