WORLD BOOK DAY

To celebrate World Book Day, children and staff all came to school dressed as book characters. We had lots of fun seeing all the great costumes!  For our home learning, we turned a potato into a character from a book.  Prizes were given to the winning potato for each class.  We were so impressed with the imagination and effort that everyone put into their homework.

It has been a very exciting two weeks as we have watched eggs hatch into chicks.  Every class has had the daily opportunity to visit the chicks, watching them develop.  We even got to hold the chicks which was really exciting.  Over the two weeks, we have learnt so much about the chicks.

Reception class all went to the local library.  They listened to a story and had an opportunity to explore the bookshelves.  Many children joined the library and took out their first book.

Recently, School Council decided that they would like our school to focus on how to look after the environment.  They held a special day to promote this where everyone came to school dressed in Earth colours such as green and blue. A visitor from Herts County Council came in to talk to us about recycling and how we can help.  We learnt about how to sort our rubbish correctly and how we can Reuse, Reduce and Recycle to help fight against climate change.
Picture
Oak Class had a visitor from Hitchin museum who showed us artifacts dating back to Victorian times.  We learnt about how things have changed and got to experience Victorian home life such as doing the washing by hand!
Picture
Nursery and Reception had a visitor from Herts County Council who taught them about how to stay safe around roads.  They used role play and other activities to practise crossing the road safely.

To support their RE learning about Judaism, Year 5 invited a visitor in to talk to them about his religion and answer some of their questions.

As part of their RE learning, Year 4 had a visitor come in to talk to them about her religion.  They learnt about some of the different gods and were able to try on outfits and handle objects used in worship.  They loved the opportunity to learn more by asking questions.

To begin their history topic about the Vikings, Year 4 had an exciting day of creative activities.  They came in wearing costumes and made helmets, shields and brooches.  They baked Viking bread and were able to taste it with their parents at the end of the day as they shared their learning.

At the beginning of the Spring term, the whole school was able to experience going to a theatre to watch the pantomime Beauty and the Beast.  It was an amazing show.

As part of their topic on forces, Willow Class had a day of experiments and activities learning about air resistance.  They had an egg-cellent challenge to design and make a device to protect an egg from the drop.  It was such a fun day and a great opportunity to apply a range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills.

Beech Class had great fun learning about healthy eating, hygiene when cooking and bread making in factory as part of a workshop run by Warburton's.  They were able to design and create their own healthy sandwich as well as try a range of different breads.
Picture
Elm Class took a walk to a local playground as part of their research for the DT topic about playground structures.  They will use the ideas they gained to create their own models.

The whole school learnt about Chinese New Year and made red envelopes (filled with chocolate coins!) to take home and share their learning with their families.
Picture
Nursery and Reception had a whole day of fun activities to help them learn about and celebrate Chinese New Year. At the end of the day, parents were invited to share their learning and taste Chinese food.

Beech class and Alder classes have all had Let's Celebrate Assemblies recently.  They all took part in their own class assembly to the whole school and their parents.

ASPIRATIONS WEEK

This year, we have introduced a new project, Aspirations Week, which we hope to build on further in future years.  There were three main foci for the week.
1. To raise the profile of personal qualities such as resilience, team work, determination, focus and drive.
2. To encourage children to think about how they will contribute to their local and wider community when they are older - both through paid and voluntary work.
3. To gain a greater understanding of what jobs/roles are available and how they are ever changing in our fast paced world.
Alongside the work covered in classes, we consider ourselves fortunate to have had some inspirational speakers coming into school to talk to the children about their chosen careers.  All the discussions not only provided the children with some ideas for future possible careers, but also showed them ways in which we can be valuable and responsible members of society.  Hopefully, it also motivated them to think about their learning behaviours and how they can apply these across the whole curriculum.
If you, or someone you know, would like to support our work in this area, please do not hesitate to get in contact.
